Topic starter
I’ve been hearing about new building consent exemption rules coming into effect around 2024–2026.
I’m not sure what has actually changed and what applies right now.
I’m trying to understand:
- What work is now consent-exempt in NZ?
- Are granny flats really included in these changes?
- Do the rules apply nationwide or vary by council?
- What are the risks of relying on exemptions?
Just want a clear explanation of the current rules.

Short answer: Yes — there are updates, but they’re often misunderstood.
What’s changing
Recent discussions include:
- Expanded consent exemptions
- Simplified processes for small dwellings
- Faster approval pathways
Important clarification
These changes:
- Are still evolving
- May not apply uniformly across councils
- Still require Building Code compliance
Risk of misunderstanding
Relying on outdated or partial info can lead to:
- Non-compliant builds
- Council enforcement issues
- Costly rework

😄 Quick tip
If you heard it from “a mate who built one last year”…
double-check it 😅
🎯 Best approach
- Check latest MBIE updates
- Confirm with your local council
- Get professional advice before building
⚠️ General information only — always verify current rules before building.
